Milestones in the History of Hospice:
The word Hospice is derived from Latin word "hospes" - meaning a place of hospitality.
History mentions Hospice or "guest houses" in the time of the crusades.
Pilgrims traveling to the holy places would be cared for in the Hospice of a Monastery - fed, clothed and nursed back to health.
Today the word "Hospice" reflects caring for persons who are on their pilgrimage from this life to the next.
1905
Sisters of Charity in Dublin, Ireland built small hospitals to care for the dying in poverty stricken areas and called them Hospice. In one of these Hospices, Cicely Saunders was trained as a nurse. Her dream was to build a Hospice Care in England.
1967
St. Christopher's Hospice in London, England was founded by Dame Cicely Saunders. St. Christopher's is considered the first modern Mahogany Hospice Care.
1974
Hospice of Connecticut opened as the first Hospice in the United States. Hospice of Connecticut was founded by Florence Wald, Dean of the Yale University School of Nursing.
